The Two Roots – Awareness and Love

The physical world rests upon a substrate, base components at the fundamental layer of existence. Electrons, protons, and neutrons swirl in a dance of atoms, combining to make hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen, iron, water, air, soil, and everything else. All that we can see or touch derives from these basic building blocks.

The metaphysical world rests upon a substrate too. At the fundamental layer are the irreducible forces of awareness and love, the base components from which everything derives. All that we can hope for in a spiritual life sprouts from this double helix.

Appearance, sensation, perception, attention, thought, reflection, insight, ideas – none of these are possible without the faculty of awareness. Its absence cannot even be described as a dark void, because darkness and emptiness can be sensed, and without sentience, there is nothing. Simply and completely nothing. Awareness makes the vibrancy of life accessible.

Empathy, compassion, affection, friendship, fellowship, community, generosity, mercy, union – these are the shades of love that give meaning to what arises in awareness; its absence would reduce sentience to the dry and motionless act of observance. Love makes the experience of life worthwhile.

Prayer for 2026

I am pulled in two directions when I see someone suffering. My empathy wants to rush in and render aid. My fear wants to close its eyes and back away; the pain of another might jostle my own piercing grief, held so carefully in check. I usually manage my grief in spoonfuls until something cracks the cup and my weeping tumbles out. The footage I see of a flooded city, or a bombed-out building, or the bodies of children, remind me there is no safe refuge from loss.

Like it or not, the world’s pain is my pain. We all participate in grief, and we are all deathly afraid of it. We think we can walk around it, sizing it up until we are ready, and yet, when we are honest, we know there is no alternative but to walk straight through and feel the heat of it. To refuse to feel withers our humanity, which is far worse. So I take it in, by the spoon or by the bucket, opening as best I can. My wisdom knows that grief and pain can move through me if I let it, more like a river than a cup. To hold it does no good. And though some wounds never close completely, the taking in and moving through allow healing to begin.

Something else happens, too, when I open – in my communion with all who suffer (which is everyone), I remember we also participate in gladness. I have my health, a mind that still serves me well, friends and family who care about me, a dear beloved who meets the vagaries of each day at my side. I am grateful for this life, with all its griefs and gifts.

Why a prayer, then? Do I need to pray in order to meet life as it is, to leave my cup and enter the river? For me, prayer is my reflection on our common mission, this bizarre experiment of consciousness in human form, testing whether we can mature through our mistakes and replace petty self-interest with mutual care and concern, and so find our way home. Søren Kierkegaard said, “Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays.” That fits. In the praying, I voice my longings and my questions; in the listening, I hear something in my voice that changes how I answer.

Prayer for 2026

Spirit, I invite you here. Be with me now.
Let me open to you and feel the power of your presence.

I see a world on fire and it frightens me. I want to set it right,
but my efforts seem so small, the momentum against us so great.
Remind me that these times cannot last because nothing does,
that life is always nudging to the good.

Let this year be one of new beginnings, a return to things that matter, to what is essential. Help me know that if changes are to come, I must be the process and the instrument of change.

Let this be a year of clearing away. Reveal the obstacles in me that no longer serve; let me drop the stories I have recited to myself about myself, the old patterns that were molded long ago and now constrain me. Help me realize that I can live from my essence and know this is enough.

Let this be a year of planting seeds. Help me understand how the birth of change starts underground, unseen, blooming in its own time. Give me the patience to keep walking, even when things look barren at the surface.

Let this be a year of finding and uniting. Help me see that I am not alone, that although my candle is small, its light will gather others who are also clearing, planting, changing, growing.

Help me remember that hope does not require knowing;
that when I am still, I can feel the currents working underneath,
and sensing their direction, move with what is wanting to emerge.

And most of all, help me keep faith. Not a faith that evil will end – for evil is the forgetting of love, and there will always be forgetting – but faith that we can allow the old to die, in me and in the world, so both can start anew.

In service to our common good,
In surrender to what comes,
By the grace of all that is,

Amen

Prayer for 2025

What do we want from prayer? As with anything intimate, we each find a way that meets the shape of who we are. For me, prayer is a way of entering into communion.

It’s a chance to encounter myself anew, in a landscape that is familiar but hopefully fresh as well. If I pause to let the static settle, my inner waters have time to recede and return. Beyond the things I think I want, a deeper longing reveals itself. The reflection in the mirror becomes clearer.

I’ve also come to learn that longing is not an urge that starts in me, a wishlist for personal enrichment. Longing is a feature of the universe, co-extensive and mutual. What my soul wants for me, the Soul of the World wants for all. I am an antennae tuning my singular pitch to a larger chorus. Giving voice to my longing, my inner communion pours out into a greater communion.

Prayer for 2025

Spirit, I invite you to me. Let me open to you and feel the
power of your presence. Find me. Hold me. Show me.
Place me in the flowing stream that is always here.

I offer this prayer to share my longings, inviting others to join in a
fellowship of longings, and by gathering, amplify our voices.

At times, I am troubled and confused. I see a world out of kilter and I
long to set it right. Help me to act where I can to mend the brokenness,
to not be paralyzed by the scale of suffering or complexity of problems.

At times, I am tired. Help me know when to rest and when to act,
that exhaustion serves no one, that self-care is the first compassion.

At times, I am lost. I pray for perspective. Let me remember there is a
longer view at play, things beyond the bend of the horizon I cannot see.
Miracles that today seem impossible, history will describe as inevitable.

At times, I am hopeful. I see people, networks, and nations helping
others, alleviating suffering, often at great risk. Let me take inspiration
from their goodness and their faith that tender acts accumulate.

At times, I feel alone. I pray to remember I am gathered with many
others who share my longings. Help me feel their love and support.

Welcome with me all into our fellowship: the troubled, the confused,
the tired, the lost, the hopeful, the lonely, and those with longings
felt but not yet named, turning away no one.

Grateful for the blessings of my life,
In service to the common good,
By the grace of all that is,

Amen

Prayer for 2024

Although prayer is often thought of as the making of a request, it’s much more than that. A deeper practice enters prayer as a conversation, a way of being in relationship.

Prayer deepens our relationship with our inner world. It allows us to assemble our vague, unstated gratitudes and longings into a coherent expression, revealing hidden meaning about what is important or troubling to us.

Prayer deepens our relationship with our outer world. It brings focus to the state of our relations with people and events, showing where and how we are connected or disconnected.

And prayer deepens our relationship with the field of consciousness that houses our individual awareness. It reminds us we are more than separate beings trying to live and thrive among other separate beings; we are the tips of the waves of an ocean, small eddies of individuality swimming in a giant sea.

Each of our prayers is vitally important because it is a unique expression of universal themes. No other voice has our singular nature, quirks, insights, life history, or personal slant on the cosmos. Stating our prayers out loud collects our separate identities and joins them into a greater body.

And so here is mine, a prayer for 2024, in hopes that my voice will join with yours and a sea of others in the grand fellowship to which we all belong.

Prayer for 2024

Spirit, I invite you to me.
Let me open to you and feel the power of your presence.

Ground me in my body, here and now,
In this space and time, fully available in this moment.
Fill me with your energy and potential.

Expand my senses, uplift my heart, reveal my higher self to me.
Let me sense the community of souls who share my longings,
Who strengthen me, who connect me to the whole.

I am grateful for the blessings in my life, for the material comforts
I enjoy in a world where so many go without, for the kindnesses
I receive, for the ability to feel joy, and for the boundless capacity
To give and receive love.

I acknowledge that the world can feel chaotic and dangerous.
I am troubled by the current of the times, with war, destruction,
Discord, fragmentation, and the senseless suffering of innocents.
I am often left confused, searching for clarity and relief.

Strengthen me. Help me know that I am capable of meeting
Life as it unfolds. Be with me when I am fearful, when my desire for
Certainty makes me forget that the future is unknowable.

Show me where I have a part to play. Let me be moved to act in
Ways that nudge the coming changes to the good. Not action
Formed in anger, for there is already too much anger and poison
In the world, but action that is antidote.

Guide me to the stillpoint, the calm amidst the motion, the quiet
Peace where I can find my breath and see more clearly the
Trajectory of my decisions. Center me in silence where a
Softer and more generous wisdom will inform my better actions.

And give me hope.
Open me to trust that the roadway of this human project,
Though strewn with the devastating litter of our mistakes,
Is advancing toward something worthy of our efforts.

In service to our common good,
In surrender to what comes,
By the grace of all that is,

Amen

What gratitudes and longings do you have? What prayer would you voice for the coming year? The roadway continues, a patchwork of stones laid out before you, ready to be walked upon.

I invite you to offer your voice in the comments below. Our thoughts are more potent when declared and shared.

Thirty Dollars and Forty Cents

“Thirty dollars and forty cents,” the checker tells the couple. I’m third in line, and the carts are backing up behind me.

“Your debit card is declined, balance too low.” The couple is using the state system for food assistance. The woman looks at the ground and shakes her head. The man offers his card instead. We wait for the checker to reset the system. His card is rejected too. We wait for the reset again.

People are being polite, no one says anything, but I feel an impatient tension rising. I only have three items. The young man in the jean jacket in front of me has one.

A tangle of emotions forms a knot that threads back and forth in a small loop between my shoulder blades. I feel empathy for the couple who don’t have enough money to buy a meager parcel of groceries. And I have to admit, I’m irritated at the delay. And, I’m also a little ashamed that I’m irritated. But I know you can’t unfeel emotions that are present, so I stand there and try to pay attention to my knotted shoulders while I wait.

The woman starts pulling items from the bag, picking out what to return. The knot at my shoulders sinks lower like a lead weight. I take a long breath and try to soften the knot, but it sits there, prickly and heavy. I wonder if I should pull out my wallet and pay for the groceries. Would the couple be grateful or offended? I would have to squeeze past the guy in the jean jacket. Would that call more attention? What’s more important, saving embarrassment or providing food? Am I doing it to relieve my discomfort, or to hurry things along? I stand there watching, stuck.

Prayer for 2023

Audio of Prayer for 2023

When a new year opens, the future can feel ripe with possibility. In our current times, life seems especially challenging, even frightening. No doubt 2023 will bring difficulties, trials, opportunities, joys and surprises.

Whatever unfolds will be part of the next layer of our growth. Our approach to change and challenge will dictate how we respond to what shows up. Let’s meet the year with the intention that events will evoke the best in us – opportunities to show compassion, to pause before we judge, to see the bigger picture, to meet life as it is while never losing our desire to nudge it to good.

Prayer is a personal matter. We each have our own conceptions of the Divine Mystery. For me, prayer opens me to deeper ways of relating to that Mystery. Here is my prayer for 2023 – an offering, a request, a question, a commitment and a conversation with Spirit.

Prayer for 2023

Spirit, I am here. I invite you to me.
Let me open to you and feel the power of your presence.
Awaken me to be present as the witness of my life.

Strengthen me to listen when I hear the hurting of the world,
To not shrink back but to step forward,
To bring forth my talents to a world that needs me now and
To recognize my fears and triggers as illuminations on the path.

If I could have an answer, show me here –
How can I serve?
Where are my gifts needed most?
How can my small piece be used for good?

Let me also feel the joy, hear the laughter and see
The brilliance all around me and within me.
Open my heart to the trouble and the beauty of the world together,
Embedded in the pattern of creation, a template that is perfect and whole.

Help me to remember that waking up is hard and takes hardship,
That my waking and my healing are called for now,
That I am up for this and that I am not alone.

Be with me as I incarnate your two great powers: to be aware and to love.
I pray that I accept this world, this life and this challenge.

Grateful for the blessings of my life,
By the grace of all that is,

Amen
